Headlands and Hidden Splendor are proud to offer Old is New, a collaboration on a classic: an English-style Best Bitter. This beer showcases Admiral Maltings’ Gallagher’s Best and Pacific Victor malts along with a pinch of a crystal malt from across the pond. An expressive English yeast and a light touch with some classic English hops round out the flavor profile. It’s a lovely, subtly malty yet dry, sessionable English ale.

The real fun comes in how it’s dispensed, though, and the history lesson that comes with it. We’re serving this beer two ways—a traditional cask-conditioned version pulled through a beer engine and a modern keg version, nitrogenated and pushed through a nitrogen faucet.

Beer history buffs will note that the nitro method of dispense was developed in the quest to replicate the cask ale drinking experience in a more shelf stable kegged version. It also served to minimize the role of the pubkeeper in serving a consistent pint from pub to pub and cask to cask. And it worked. But there’s still a lot to be said for the traditional cask conditioning methods that inspired it.

We’ll also wade into one of the fiercest debates of all among cask ale fans: sparkler—yes or no? This seemingly innocuous little part that attaches to a beer engine’s spout is, in a sense, the bridge between cask and nitro dispense. The battle lines in the UK are drawn between north and south on the all-important Sparkler Debate. We shall find out which we prefer on 8/20. Don’t miss it.
